TIM WYNNE REVIEWS THE GREAT TASTE FOOD AWARDS 2018

I’ve often thought about what it might take to eat my way around an entire country. Luckily for me the cabinet secretary for Energy, Planning and Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths AM, had the same idea. Also luckily for us, for convenience, she decided to make the best of Welsh Entries into the 2018 Great Taste Awards right at home in Cardiff Bay’s St David’s Hotel.

The event, hosted by broadcaster Nigel Barden, brought a massive 110 products for us to try and for those of you with a smaller appetite or much less free time, I’ve compiled a list of some of my favourites.

Teifi Cheese is the one that had my own father the most envious. For years now, every Christmas he’s received this as a gift from work. The beautifully crafted table cheeses are a must for anyone who’s looking to take a dish a step further. If you’re indecisive on which one to choose, of their many varieties, The Celtic Promise is a firm favourite of both my Dad and my old housemate. Leah described it to me as being both “flavourful and lovely and mild at the same time.”

Welsh Great Taste food and drink winners on show to celebrate their success

The Welsh Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Planning and Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths is in attendance today (Tuesday 6 November)  when  153 products from Wales  recognised earlier this year in the prestigious Great Taste awards, are showcased  at a celebratory event at the St David’s Hotel, Cardiff.

Presented by the broadcaster and Chairman of the Great Taste Awards, Nigel Barden, the event follows the format of a Showcase and Market style Meet the Producer, and provides a platform to display the finest Welsh food and drink products available. A range of trade buyers from the retail and hospitality sector and Welsh Assembly Members are in attendance.

This year’s Great Taste Welsh winners saw producers from independent artisan producers to larger distributors being recognised with 110 Welsh products achieving 1-star, 31 getting 2-stars and 12 being deemed worthy of the 3-stars accolade. The Great Taste, organised by the Guild of Fine Food, is the acknowledged benchmark for fine food and drink, and is described as the ‘Oscars’ of the food world.

Over 40 award winning producers are attending the celebratory event including Caws Teifi Cheese, who recently topped the bill by receiving the top accolade of Golden Fork from Wales.

Caws Teifi Cheese is the longest established artisan cheese maker in Wales, having produced award winning raw milk cheeses for over 30 years.

Founded in 1982, by co-founder John Savage-Onstwedder, who came to Wales from Holland to follow his dream of organic farming and reviving the lost tradition of using raw milk and local ingredients to make high quality artisanal cheese, commented:

“To be awarded 3 stars in the Great Taste Awards is a testament to the skill and dedication of the whole team here at Caws Teifi Cheese. It also reflects the quality of the milk produced here in Ceredigion and we must give credit to Mr & Mrs Williams of Cilcert Farm, Ffos-y-Ffin, Aberaeron who produce the milk that makes our cheese. That the most highly awarded cheese in Britain is produced here in Ceredigion proves that both Welsh milk and cheeses are something we can all be proud of.”

Celtic Promise wins Golden Fork Award for Best Welsh Food Product at Great Taste Awards 2018

Already the most highly awarded raw milk cheese in the UK, Celtic Promise has added a Golden Fork award to our trophy cabinet here in Ceredigion.

The Golden Fork Award is the highest accolade presented by The Great Taste Awards which itself is one of the most coveted food awards in the world. A record breaking 12,634 products were judged over a period of 65 days which resulted in 192 products awarded a 3-star and 10 products a Golden Fork Award. Celtic Promise was awarded a 3-star and a Golden Fork Award for the Best Food Product from Wales.

Our co-founder John Savage-Onstwedder comments: “to be awarded 3 stars in the Great Taste Awards is a testament to the skill and dedication of the whole team here at Caws Teifi Cheese. It also reflects the quality of the milk produced here in Ceredigion and we must give credit to Mr & Mrs Williams of Cilcert Farm, Ffos-y-Ffin, Aberaeron who produce the milk that makes our cheese.  The Golden Fork award will take pride of place here on the farm.  The most highly-awarded British cheese, Celtic Promise, is a Caerphilly type washed-rind cheese with a slightly moist, pink rind. Soft and buttery as it matures it developed a slightly pungent aroma and has a delicate, mild flavour creating a delicious contrast with the rind. It is supple, smooth, spicy and aromatic. Celtic Promise is considered a ‘table cheese’ by some but it is also good to cook with when a strong, creamy flavour is required.

 John Savage-Onstwedder comments,

Congratulating Caws Teifi Cheese, the Welsh Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Planning and Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths AM said,

“Congratulations to Caws Teifi Cheese on their achievements in the Great Taste awards. It is very encouraging to see established, family run companies doing so well and being acknowledged for the hard work and commitment they put in to producing quality produce.

The awards are an important showcase of quality, innovation and outstanding taste from Welsh companies. They should be very proud and I wish them the very best for the future.”

Rare raw milk cheese delivers on promise, grabbing Golden Fork for Welsh dairy

Celebrating the very best in food and drink, Great Taste, the world’s most coveted food awards, has reached its grand finale for 2018. The Great Taste Golden Fork for the best food or drink from Wales was presented to Caws Teifi Cheese from Ceredigion for its Celtic Promise, a “well structured” washed rind raw milk cheese. Described as “artisan cheese making at its finest”, demonstrating “astonishing skill”, the cheese is “floral, farmyard and buttery with amazing gamey and livery notes on the punchy rind”. As the praise rolled in, judges also commented on the “fruitiness to the paste, giving a freshness to the flavour and helping it melt in the mouth”.

Out of a record breaking 12,634 products entered into Great Taste 2018, the Celtic Promise, which was one of the first pungent washed rind raw milk cheeses to be produced in modern Britain, was celebrated as the best tasting product in its region at the Great Taste Golden Fork Dinner held on Sunday 2 September at the InterContinental Park Lane Hotel, London, where over 350 guests from the world of fine food gathered to hear the results of many months of rigorous judging.

Dutch cheeses

There's a lot more to Dutch cheeses than a pre-packaged, red-rinded supermarket Edam, Jenni explores some of the finer choices for the cheese connoisseur...

Under normal circumstances I'd no sooner go to Borough Market on a Saturday than visit the dentist. I hate crowds, and there always seems to be more people there taking pictures than buying food. But this week I was forced down there for work and happily found a lovely cheese I'd not tried before (while unsuccessfully attempting to skirt the human traffic jam in the Green Market area).

Every Dutch person I've ever met talks longingly of the wonderful farmhouse cheeses made in Holland and how sad it is that most Brits are only aware of dreary factory-produced Edam. In fact for years some of the best 'Dutch' cheeses on sale in the UK have been the artisan-made gouda-style cheeses produced by Dutch expatriates, such as multi-award-winning Teifi from Wales and the fabulously buttery Coolea from Ireland.

Cardigan businesses scoop Great Taste awards

Pride of place goes to Caws Teifi’s Celtic Promise, whose raw milk cheese produced at their Glynhynod Farm base tickled the judges’ tastebuds.

It earned the Llandysul firm a coveted three gold stars to add to a host of awards the company also won at the Royal Welsh Show and capped a hectic few weeks which also saw Prince Charles visit the site.

Owner John Savage-Onstwedder: “Celtic Promise is the most highly-awarded British cheese and it’s great to see all the hard work being rewarded again.”

The Caerphilly type washed-rind cheese’s soft, buttery texture, bold aroma and mild flavour appealed to the judges.
